Powelson’s Op-Ed Lays Out the Case for Government-Regulated, Private Water in Connecticut

In a new op-ed in the Connecticut Mirror, NAWC President and CEO Robert Powelson lays out the many reasons why transitioning a regulated, private water company to a government water authority is not in the best interest of customers.

Focusing on the many benefits that come from the stringent regulatory oversight the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) provides for customers of private water utilities in the state, Powelson notes that, if regulated, private water utilities are transitioned to a government-run entity, this oversight would be non-existent. Powelson also points to the many studies that show that regulated, private water companies provide safer water than government-run utilities.

He concludes:

For Connecticut, a new, untested government-run entity carries significant risks, including potential service disruptions, increased costs to customers and a loss of the institutional knowledge and expertise that has been cultivated over a long history.
