New Federal Safety Data Shows Private Water Companies Have Safer Workplaces than Municipals

Truth from the Tap has an updated safety infographic that highlights the stellar safety record of America’s water companies – now with the latest data from 2021 included.

An analysis of the most recently available federal safety data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that private sector water utility workers are less likely to be injured on the job compared to utilities run by local governments. Specifically, the data shows a 34.6% lower rate of injuries and illnesses for private water utility workers compared to municipal workers between 2011 and 2021. The previous version of the infographic included data through 2020 and showed a 21.5% lower rate of injuries and illness.

Safer workplaces are one of the many benefits that comes from working with a private water company. Just like with water quality, NAWC member company employees can focus on one thing – providing the best water service possible – and not all the other things that fall on public works departments. This allows workers to be better trained and focus on their jobs rather than having to be a “jack (or jane) of all trades.”
